I took the liberty of translating CG World's short 2017 interview with Resident Evil 7's lead character designer Hirofumi Nakaoka. I wanted to publish this while it was still February 2, but I think I might be a bit too late.

The column, titled Kojima Cinema, was serialized on Game Hihyō from Vol. 13 (Feb. 1997) to Vol. 34 (Sept. 2000), lasting 21 installments (Vol. 33 was a break). I have plans to translate some of them (if not all) on my personal page. Vol. 28 is not available online.

I thought I would provide some context due to the popularity of this tweet. This was drawn for a movie review that Hideo Kojima wrote for Game Hihyō magazine as part of a regular column. Other movies drawn by Shinkawa include Blade, Enemy of the State, Gemini and Iron Giant.

Worth noting is that the Menacer, a bazooka-shaped light gun that was released for the Sega Genesis in the US was on display as the "Mega Spider", but the peripheral was ultimately never released in Japan.

Coverage of Yūsei Sega World from Beep! Mega Drive (Feb. 93). This was an event that was held on December 6, 1992 celebrating the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in Japan. Many games and peripherals were on display on the show and celebrities such as Yumiko Takahashi attended.

Ghosts 'n Goblin: Incredible Toon Machine preview from EGM#75 (October 1995). A console port of the PC game Sid & Al's Incredible Toons with a Ghosts 'n Goblins theme. The US version was unreleased, but it came out in Japan as Arthur to Astaroth no Nazo Makaimura.

A cool little attention to detail in Death Stranding. In order #38, Sam is given a suspicious package by a man claiming to be an employee of Bridges. If you check the owner history of the item, you will discover the identity of the suspicious man (not that isn't kind of obvious).

The final two pages contains character profiles of the four final bosses, Krauser and his three musketeers (Billy, Axel and Laurence). The artwork for the bosses look like typical setting drawings, as opposed to promotional art. 3/3

Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong '94 back cover ads from different magazines (The Super Famicom and Famicom Tsūshin respectively) which used rough sketches to promote the games. Makes me wonder if there were more ads done in this style or was it just these two.

I haven't had much of a chance to play Death Stranding, despite its recent release, but I felt it's worth noting that the game has some From Software DNA in it. Lead cinematic artist Shota Hirasawa worked on Dark Souls II, among other games, prior to joining Kojima Productions.

My translation of a Dark Souls III interview with the graphic designing team published by CGWorld. One of the most fascinating interviews I had the pleasure of translating, as they go into detail of the character creation process.
