My latest column is on the politics of paygo. Please note that I have timed this announcement with remarkable precision. Sophisticated Twitter analytics reveal that basically everyone is online on Friday nights around midnight.

New from me at : What was really going on in that misreported University of Missouri story where officials supposedly said it's sexual misconduct to ask a shorter person out? Not quite PC gone wild, but an indication of real problems.

One of 's main site categories is philosophy. We especially like it when we can post philosophical content that also cross-cuts with other topics. Yesterday we did that twice.

Having spent the fall getting acclimated to being back at school, starting this month I'll be joining as a(n approximately) monthly columnist. Arc is a consistently great read with a real breadth of coverage and publishes several philosophers and other thoughtful people.

Today, the 116th Congress was sworn in. In my debut piece for , I take a look at the prospects for small government in the newly divided legislature. Spoiler alert: Not looking too good on spending, but there’s potential elsewhere.

Underlying Brexit is tension between the global and the local. That tension is inescapable and is played out throughout the world. We ought to grapple with that tension honestly rather than pitting globalists and localists against each other as if there were a binary choice.

As debate rages over a new Dem Rep. saying "impeach the motherfucker," remember: Trump's actions in office are objectively impeachable. Some don't care because they like other stuff he does, while others don't want to because they fear the consequences.

One of the worst things I've ever seen was a childhood friend who developed mental illness and was hospitalized during a psychotic episode, was is serious crisis, and was *also* forced to deal with smoking withdrawal at the same. I firmly agree that the policies are misguided.

I am the mom of a disabled child in a movie. I am utterly miserable yet also saintly. My kid's siblings are completely ignored because I'm so wrapped up. I definitely don't have fun and laugh—too busy fighting for my kid, who exists to teach everyone what is really important.

Happy New Year . Consider sparing 12mins to read this article, in which I discuss why Henry Kissinger’s understanding of AI is better than yours. You’re guaranteed to learn something, if only about the errors of one of your critics.

Both Republicans & Democrats are upset with Mitt Romney. (For very different reasons.) 's take is worth the read & adds perspective - specifically that R's are unhappy because Romney told the truth about Trump. We won't always agree, but they are worth a follow.

Compellingly argued by : "If someone were to get over alcoholism—or opiate or heroin addiction—using cigarettes as an aid, that person is likely to be, on the whole, better off. We should allow people to make that determination for themselves."
