And of course I have to give a shout out to all the patrons and contributors who are helping fund this effort! Without your support, this level of design/prototyping would not be possible! You are literally on the forefront of cutting edge ion thruster R&D!

At only 45mm square, this single module also lends itself perfectly for an electrospray cluster for Cubesats! In fact, I am currently working on the conceptual CAD model for the first ever AIS cluster, bringing this thruster to the Cubesat level as well! More details soon!

I am pleased to reveal the V1 PCB for the AIS-ILIS1 ionic electrospray thruster for PocketQubes! The design is already submitted to and being made now. If it works it will be the most advanced PQ thruster ever designed and built as well as the first ever PQ ion thruster!

I want to personally thank and recognize for his amazingly generous contribution sponsoring AIS open source electric propulsion. Your support is directly driving the development of the AIS-ILIS1, and is making the vision of truly accessible EP a reality! Thank you!!!

Just got a call from the glass manufacturer today. Glass discs for the ILIS1 thruster arrived! Just a last design review, then we start cutting glass! Estimated arrival date for the final ion emitters is 03/25. In the meantime, lots of prep to do for this massively critical test!

I have also begun work on an actual SMA kit thruster board design. Hopefully I can verify the first junk prototype version in low vacuum by the time the V1 design is complete and start production on the PCBs. There will be thruster kits available one day, hopefully soon! (9/)

What I will do is first pot the connections on the SMA to prevent unnecessary breakdown. I will also remove the load switch and go to directly powering it with an external 3.3-5v supply. Hopefully I can clean out the foreline soon and get back to round 2 testing for it (8/)

Moving on to the SMA kit thruster, it actually turns out that none of the high voltage circuitry failed, just the low voltage load switch input shorted. This is actually great news, meaning the kit thruster is still a go for continued development! (7/)

Since all these companies have many orders of magnitude more funding than myself while at the end of the day I'm desperately trying to scrape by, it makes for an interesting challenge. However, I did know this was a risk going open source - no reason to back down now! (6/)

However, I can't help but feel that companies will eventually try to take advantage/credit of open source designs themselves, especially for higher performance stuff down the road, as there is no incentive to compensate for the R&D and work that goes into these designs (5/)

It is particularly interesting that actual small sat companies are asking about building their own. This could be a double edged sword. It is fantastic that this work is starting to proliferate further and becoming more recognized in the professional field (4/).

The gPPT series will still remain as a low cost functional scientific demo payload for picosats and learning tool for labs/enthusiasts, but it would be nice to work out the bugs even if it can't move a satellite itself (3/)

Since I have still been getting inquiries about it from enthusiasts and even companies, I will probably reopen development on it and start designing the gPPT4 from lessons learned with the prior builds, and see if I can reduce cost further while trying to improve performance (2/)

For the gPPT V4, it was already established during testing that failure to ignite was due to the main bank energy being too low due to the significantly reduced cap value. The actual failure on board is confirmed to be the thyristor which was expected as I was overdriving it (1/)

Finally got around to debugging the thrusters from the prior two unsuccessful tests. AIS-gPPT3-1C V4 on the left, and the experimental prototype SMA kit thruster on the right. Despite the setbacks from these tests, there is still some good news going forward. Details below!

I am finally moving forward on the manufacture of the AIS-ILIS1 thruster ion emitter! Glass stock is on its way to the manufacturer for production! Lead time is ~6 weeks, but the clock has officially started on this highly anticipated low-cost PQ-compatible electrospray thruster!
