What does the factory firmware do differently? I’m guessing test sounds?
AirPods (1st Gen) Durability Stress Test Prototype Units. To test the durability of a product, an unfortunate (but needed) step is to stress test actual hardware. That or some kind of debug mode that a normal bt connection wouldn’t be able to make sense of is my guess

It really isn’t. These tests are required for the product to pass Validation Testing. I assure you this isn’t half of the amount of the ones that were destroyed for this test. It’s all recycled though according to Apple, and it’s pretty illegal to lie about something like that.
