      Edward Snowden Retweeted emptywheel

"The Wire" (2002) is helping the terrorists. David Simon wanted for questioning.https://twitter.com/emptywheel/status/711532353684938752 …

      Edward Snowden added,

      emptywheel @emptywheel
Article suggests ISIS far more reliant on burner phones than encryption. You know, OpSec technique widely in use well before @Snowden.

@Snowden Of course that is a credible tactical argument to get metadata ASAP, so as to isolate burner before discard. Just saying.

    3. Edward Snowden ‏@Snowden 20 Mar 2016

@AoDespair Not really. Phones used in real-world ops are disposed on a per-action, or per-call basis. Lifetimes of minutes, hours. Not days.

@Snowden Can't speak to shelf-life of disposible phone in Pakistan. In Baltimore, discipline and cost are such that it can be days.

    5. Edward Snowden ‏@Snowden 20 Mar 2016

@AoDespair Fair point. My background is in intelligence, not law enforcement. Transnational terrorists aren't hurting for burners.

@Snowden Neither should top-end drug traffickers in the more affluent US. And yet by the time the process trickles to the corner boys....

    7. Edward Snowden ‏@Snowden 20 Mar 2016

@AoDespair Tbf, mass surveillance wasn't pitched to catch "corner boys" or even "The Greek," but on thwarting OBLs. And there, never worked.

    8. Edward Snowden ‏@Snowden 20 Mar 2016

@AoDespair Commercial activities (drug sales) will always generate records that sporadic offensive operations (terrorism) will not.

@Snowden Differences sure. But it's remains that coms are the singular place where any conspiracy is vulnerable prior to crime. Gotta try.

@Snowden I acknowledge fears of a panopticon. I wish others would also acknowledge that coms are an elemental investigative avenue.

@AoDespair Nobody argues against comms surveillance. They argue about scope. Handsets v. networks. "Collect it all" v. individual warrants.

        2. Edward Snowden ‏@Snowden 20 Mar 2016

@AoDespair Mass surveillance isn't without *any* value, it's just without value in thwarting attacks -- which was the public justification.

@Snowden @AoDespair authorizng mass surveillance is a band-aid to the larger problem: USA's unjustified foreign wars causes terror blowback

@bidupedo @Snowden Oh boy a specific discussion about privacy v security re: metadata now has a guy with a megaphone and slogans. It's over.

@AoDespair Seems like you try to make arguments by attempting to insult at the same time. Not sure the need.

@bidupedo Folks are discussing something specific - a conundrum between privacy needs and security assets. It's complicated. And...

@bidupedo ...the issue exists regardless of our foreign policies. It exists for all modern nations in a shrinking world....

@schlockdaddy @Snowden Or even a legit subpeona for metadata, which does not require a Title III order.
