Dumb. Having reported on police in my first career, I can assure everyone that the average cop is no more a totem of gun safety than a trained film armorer. The real issue here is that whoever is responsible is empowered and heeded and already existing protocols are followed.https://twitter.com/DEADLINE/status/1457785208325898245 …

Secondarily, producers should at this point give serious consideration to eschewing working weapons and blank rounds in most of the work. CGI technology is at a point when muzzle flashes and cordite smoke can be replicated in post-production processes.

Probably could fabricate something that recoils a bit as well, even though the average viewer could probably not tell the difference anyway

Can imagine a big scale production like Generation Kill was a logistical headache to ensure prop safety. However your team did it, the effects were the best I have seen on TV.

It's all fake anyway. The fact that everyone in a scene isn't temporarily deaf and reaching for their ears after a gun fires inside a car or room is the biggest giveaway

100 percent this. A half decent replica Airsoft gun with a gas blowback system would be adequate in most scenarios.

Exactly what my feeling was. I'm no executive bean counter, but it should be possible to have a weapon that looks and reacts realistically but fires absolutely nothing and fix the rest afterwards.

Should be easy to create a gun with a battery pack in the grip that powers a slide action to simulate the recoil, right? A more advanced version could communicate XYZ position information at the time of firing to help automate the muzzle flashes/smoke in post…?
