This week of joins to chat about his new book “Random Acts of Medicine.” The book uses natural experiments – studies generated by chance in the real world – to reveal why similar patients sometimes get different care.

When our brains are overwhelmed, we tend to look for mental shortcuts – numbers to round and patterns to repeat. uses research to reveal how these logical leaps shape health care more than patients and even providers realize. Learn more:

There is another interesting observation/hypothesis here, aside from chatgpt. Given the constellation of symptoms that comprise LongCovid overlap w/ other diseases, the presence of LongCovid makes these diseases, when they are present, less likely to be or more slowly diagnosed.

After a patient saw multiple physicians and neurologists over 6 months and was assigned a diagnosis of #LongCovid, a relative entered her symptoms into #ChatGPT with the correct output. Diagnosis was confirmed by antibody testing and therapy has been initiated.

There is an interesting natural experiment here about the impact of perceptions of workplace culture. I wonder if the number of female applicants to Stanford surgery will go up next year compared to a control group of programs. let’s write the paper

3/ Focusing on quality & retention in these workers may be an impt channel to improve patient outcomes. I doubt many health systems have viewed this group of workers in this way. Maybe systems should experiment to see how job tenure, worker quality, patient outcomes are affected

2/ This study changed the way I think about this part of the health care workforce. One would easily expect effects of higher quality and less job turnover in this group on patient experience, but hard clinical outcomes also improve, which is striking.

If you are interested in how coffee affects the heart in a big data way, one could easily look at telemetry on hospitalized patients immediately pre and post coffee intake that happens with hospital breakfast.

A randomized trial of coffee consumption showed no increased of premature atrial contractions (PACs). Secondary endpoints (hypothesis-generating): more PVCs, more physical activity, ~30 mins less sleep, no change in glucose levels nejm.org/?query=feature @NEJM
