If you're talking about racist coronavirus backlash, it's important to keep in mind that this backlash is racial, not ethnic. It's not going to affect Chinese people in China first - it's most directly affecting all East and Southeast Asian diaspora people living as minorities.
As many Jewish people have noted, anti-Asian racism in the US works a lot like antisemitism. But it operates racially, not ethnically. Anyone "visibly" East or Southeast Asian faces it (South Asians face a different no less violent racism more tied to colorism & Islamophobia).
At the height of the 80s anti-Japanese panic, two white men killed Vincent Chin, a Chinese-American, in revenge for "Japanese stealing jobs". They paid a $3000 fine and never served jail time. When racists get mad at any E/SE Asian country, their brain defaults to "all the same".
Saying "but the Chinese government does bad things" in the context of racist backlash is derailing. Of course the Chinese government is fucked. But the backlash affects the innocent more than the guilty. A Central Asian Uighur refugee of Chinese state violence would face it.
I don't want to minimize the possibility that this racist, xenophobic backlash could lead to a catastrophic war with China. And in any case, it will affect more Chinese-Americans than other Asian-Americans, because of demographics. Just don't forget the racialization involved.
And people from central America who happen to "look chinese".
