Somebody did some extremely basic WHOIS searching and found that the person who set up all the "reopen $STATENAME" protest web sites is in fact one guy in Jacksonville. https://www.reddit.com/r/maryland/comments/g3niq3/i_simply_cannot_believe_that_people_are/fnstpyl … So, most of what's going on here is an organized astroturfing campaign.

100% it is astroturfing. Look at who's funding them and who's leading them.

It's not clear that much funding or direction is needed -- throwing up a website and FB page costs nothing. I'm more interested in whether there folks involved in running this are also involved in right-wing militias (Proud Boys etc.) (/cc

In general, since the bar for organizing is so low-- just putting up Facebook pages or even posts-- the organizers tend to be alt-light grifters, like the Dorr brothers running pages for PA, MN, and OH. Or Bill Way, a get-rich-quick/work-from-home grifter, in Colorado.pic.twitter.com/zb9n5HOD7L

The Dorr brothers are kind of famous for running scams around 2nd Amendment rights, the pro-life movement, and disaster relief, so some folks have made a whole website just documenting their grifts here. https://www.dorrbrotherscams.com/

But like with a lot of umbrella groups that have broad goals (e.g. "LIBERATE MICHIGAN," as Trump tweeted), we start to see far-right militias and violent hate groups show up. In Michigan, the Proud Boys came to the gridlock protest, and in Boston, so did the American Guard.

And
@roses_thirteen did a good thread documenting the involvement of Proud Boys and Three Percenter militia members in the "ReOpen PA" movement.https://twitter.com/roses_thirteen/status/1251750982805065729 …AntiFash Gordon ajouté,
Thirteen Roses @roses_thirteenOver the next few weeks, there will be a series of “protests” organized by the broad nationalist movement within PA. As the months go by into summer and fall, we will not forget who put these events in motion#NoMercy2020 pic.twitter.com/zpgA6m3cTyAfficher cette discussion1 réponse 11 Retweets 21 j'aime
For a good overview of the groups involved so far, see @jason_a_w's coverage in the @guardian, including the revelation that the events are being promoted by rightwing orgs receiving Koch and Coors money.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/17/far-right-coronavirus-protests-restrictions?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

They should be classified as terrorist groups.
