Then-Chancellor Franz von Papen backed Hitler's appointment. He thought Hitler could be controlled. Von Papen assumed the role of Vice Chancellor. After the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, von Papen stepped down entirely, cowed by the same forces he'd sought to control.
