Others have put it better, but I think it's important in this analysis to acknowledge that in many ways, it was also a beginning of more people paying attention to vicious online behavior that had already been harming marginalized populations.
GamerGate was, in many ways, the beginnings of the alt-right as an online mob.
The doxxing, harassment, vicious misogyny, coded antisemitism, etc.— it’s all there.
