it’s an app ostensibly centered on “free speech,” so I thought it was like the french verb (“Parler”— to speak) but with this crowd, it could easily be some 1940s race scientist

Pretty sure you're right, "parley" is just a pirate anglicization of parler. I still absolutely refuse to say it without a pirate accent, though
