It's the definition, but also the context? "Female" doesn't necessarily refer to a human being, and it tends to be used online by dudes who are about to either (1) dehumanize women, or (2) engage in some weird biological essentialism, since it sounds more science-y.

Can we make an exception for ESL people? Because over here, that term gets used by even radicals of all genders because like... speaking foreign languages is hard.

Oh, god yes! Always exceptions for ESL folks. Language always has connotations that non-native speakers struggle with. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how many words Spanish has for "worm."
