      (1) The lede of a story sets the reader’s view of the actions described, and you used your lede to call them a “fraternity.” (2) In what sense are they a “fraternity”? Are they connected to a college? Do they have Greek letters? Or do they simply call themselves a “frat”?pic.twitter.com/CWHFgr6Jsl

I get that there's this ongoing tension but u gotta admit that a bunch of ppl piling on to tell a woman journalist what a frat is ... it's interesting...

You call two people with similar polite criticism a “pile on”? Go fuck yourself if you want to make unsubstantiated accusations of sexism, Alex.

Alright so it's not a "pile on" so much as it is two ppl with repeating comments, apologies for not understanding that. At the same time, ur "politeness" seems also kinda condescending. Ur pretty rude/defensive to me which sort of reflects on the sentiment more generally 🙂

What if the National Socialist Movement has been described as a “fraternity” here? The KKK? Substitute any other hate group, and this would be a wildly softball description. But instead asking that the media get it right, you want to accuse me of sexism and tone police me?

I think the 1920s Klan was framed as a fraternal organization almost exactly like the PBs and afaik historians often keep that framing bc it's possible to be a fraternity and all the other evil things at the same time...

Wow, I wonder what helped the Klan grow? Could it have been the framing of it as an anodyne fraternal organization rather than a violent hate group? Words matter. That was my only point in raising this issue.

In some ways the Klan was less violent than the PBs. Some chapters openly renounced violence and wanted to just become the secret orchestrators of the US. it's not just the framing but the content, that's all I'm saying - they can be both a fraternal org and hate group.

I’d agree themst they can be both a fraternal org and a hate group. But in that case, why are you defending simply describing the Proud Boys as a “fraternity”?

If i was the editor I'd have left in Katie's initial paragraph describing them as a hate group. It's not her fault it got cut and I don't see the point of raking her over the coals on it.

I was going to leave it alone, until she posted this, mocking everyone who had an issue with the Proud Boys simply being described as a “fraternity.” You can say I’m “raking” her, but she’s the one who chose to specifically defend that editorial decision.pic.twitter.com/oC3kg05tns
