Instead, why not use the designation of a professional third-party, like the @splcenter, which calls them a “hate group”?

Not to describe a violent right-wing hate group, no. Giving them a pass like that isn’t balance, it’s bias. You’re intentionally softening their image to create more conflict and ambiguity in your story. Don’t do that.
