On your first note, I don’t use Telegram and you have a fair point. Still, as I understand it, people have to proactively search these people/groups out, right?

It’s pretty much the same way you’d join a Facebook group. You can search for it, people can send you an invite link, or people can share a post from one group to another, so you might stumble across it in a totally separate group. It’s social media *and* encrypted messaging.

I didn’t say it was better. I said it’s fundamentally different I don’t agree with what these people are saying on any platform. But I’m not sure I agree with completely banning them from communicating, either

(1) Do you use Telegram? Because you don’t understand how it works. These are PUBLIC groups that work pretty much like Facebook pages. (2) Even if what you are claiming is true, why do you think a particular platform is obligated to help the them organize an ethnic cleansing?

I’m actually not in the “hate speech much be silenced at all costs” camp, myself. I think it’s far more useful to have these people out in the open, where we can see them and hear them, than underground, plotting their ill deeds That’s just, like, my opinion, man

TBC: I support the deplatforming of hateful people from social media/tech sites because I believe the owners/operators of those sites have free speech rights that trump those of the people making the hateful speech. To ban companies from deplatforming would impinge on their FOS

So how would Telegram banning the far-right be any different from, say, Mailchimp banning Milo?
