Don’t let men in leftist circles get away with abuse.
Believing survivors is antifa.
Solidarity to @BonhommeRouler for being courageous enough to tell this story.

And before anyone starts, it’s not “bad for the movement” to call out abuse. What’s bad for the movement is letting toxic cultures of abuse fester, and watching women and non-binary organizers drop out or never even join up in the first place.

And before anyone *really* fucking starts with me, remember this— abuse is fundamentally about power dynamics and isolation, two factors that are present in *every* step of this story. If you don’t get that, go back and read it again.

Ask yourself two questions: 1.) Is this an interaction between people with equal amounts of social capital? And; 2.) Is the tweeter being connected to a larger community, as we would expect in leftist organizing, or instead, are they being isolated by Dr Bones?

Unequal power dynamics and isolation are the hallmarks of abuse. We don’t always see what manipulation happens behind closed doors. But we can damn sure spot hierarchies and isolation. And we need to start calling that out.

For more on gender-based violence on the left, two recommendations: 1.) Courtney Desiree Morris’ “Why Misogynists Make Great Informants” https://incite-national.org/2010/07/15/why-misogynists-make-great-informants-how-gender-violence-on-the-left-enables-state-violence-in-radical-movements/ … 2.)

Yeah, honestly, we need better structures on the left to hold abusers accountable and monitor them going forward, so that they don’t just lurk around the edges, picking vulnerable people new to the movement, who might not have a strong base of support.
