A review of the evidence for the distinction between "active" working memory, implemented through persistent spiking activity, and "silent" working memory, which maintains information via short-term synaptic plasticity.

Just listened to this episode on GRExit and it is fantastic. Spoiler alert: they mostly come down on the side of not dropping the GRE, laying out reasons for why dropping is not likely to be an effective tool for improving diversity.

Happy this review is finally out with , , and Neal Cohen. I had some version of it on my “things I want to write” list for over 10 years! Persistence is still the best career advice I’ve received!

"With preprinting, publishing is a relatively trivial act...When most anything can be published, publication recedes as the key incentive. What takes its place? Evaluation. Journals have historically confounded publication with evaluation."

Apology letter from for signing the AAP letter opposing open access. Thank you to the APS leadership for reconsidering this position and taking action. Hopefully other societies will follow this example.

New year, new preprint! We disentangle neocortical alpha/beta and hippocampal theta/gamma in episodic memory. NC desync. peaks during info. representation while hipp. sync. peaks during mnemonic binding . Thanks to !

I have a favor to ask. For 20+ years I've been working on a dream: to make all science funded by US taxpayers freely available to all. We are on the verge of achieving this. But we need to show that people care. So please, if you can, sign this letter:

My blogpost on how & why we use convolutional neural networks as a model of the visual system is probably the most read thing I've ever written and it's now been expanded & updated into a proper review article, complete with 136 references & 5 new figures!

Interested in the relationship between schemas and the episodes that make them up? Check out our new preprint! We find that episodic retrieval relies more on schematic memory over time, even as the schemas themselves become less precisely remembered.

New prepint! We found that similar memories repel away from one another over learning such that they are remembered as further apart than they were experienced. These distortions were associated with reduced interference suggesting an adaptive mechanism.
