I noticed a young white female, who I guess was about 17 or 18 with older black males both around my age, so also 25 - The 'trio' looked 'odd.' At that time Kings Cross was notorious for drugs and prostitution - I pulled alongside the trio and decided to have words with them all

The males were 'known' for both drugs and 'pimping' related offences but the younger white female was not! She appeared 'high' - she looked confused - She had no ID on her - Then in a moment of lucidity she gave me a life story, cracked a joke with the two older men

Things seemed okay but I wasn't sure - I asked for all their personal details again - All of them were consistent with were they had just been and where they were all going to - So I gave the trio the benefit of the doubt and drove off- But I wasn't sure - I felt uneasy

I turned the car around and drove back towards the trio - The two older black men immediately ran - The girl just froze - I spoke to her and she broke down - I radioed in the details of the two older men and after 5 mins of calming the girl down she 'confessed' to being

a drug addict; a crack addict and was 'working' as a prostitute for the two older black men and was only 14 years of age - I was floored by the confession- Emotionally floored - We immediately took the girl to Islington Police Station, booked her in and made 'enquiries'

The custody officer wanted her out of the Police Station asap so I contacted Camden Social Services - It was Friday evening - If you have ever tried to get a Social Worker at any other time than between the hours of 10 - 4 Monday to Friday then you will know what happened next

Social Services REFUSED to attend the Police Station - REFUSED to be concerned for a child's welfare - Yes, she was a child and yes she may have had sex with 100's of adult men but she WAS A CHILD - We were all stunned - My colleague spent the next few hours caring for the girl

Eventually, we tracked down an aunty who wanted nothing to do with her and called her a c*nt for stealing to fund her crack addiction - She was still a CHILD - This CHILD was from a good home in Surrey - She lost her way, she got in with the wrong crowd, her parents gave up

No one wanted this CHILD - We took the CHILD home - She became nothing more than a signature in my pocket notebook as if someone was signing for a parcel - Her dad signed for her - He did not want to - He did not want his CHILD to be home - I have never forgotten her

But I ashamed because I do not now remember her name - I think of that CHILD every day - But I was paid not to turn a blind eye and at least she had care & comfort even if only for a few hours & that is why I felt compelled to write this - So shame on Greater Manchester Police
