I was involved with a man I met online for almost a year. I discovered his name and identity were fake and that he was a lawyer. The law needs to change.

Not seen the offending tweets so can't comment. If people believe an offence has been committed then report it to the police. And just being rude isn't yet an offence. Nolan principles apply to appointments not to elected people - we have an electorate to hold us to account.

I’m not referring to an individual or specific tweets. That isn’t the point nor story here, Simon, with respect. The story is about a large local authority stepping back from this. But I bow to your superior knowledge - sincerely - as I’m far from a legal expert in these matters.

The precedent was when Ken Livingstone was subject to a standards complaint about abusing a journalist outside a party. The court ruled that the code did not apply to politicians in their private lives and in my view that was the right decision.

But is it ‘private’ if the anonymous account is tweeting about official business and responding to people posing matters of an official nature?

A councillor making/using an anonymous account to 'speak his mind' with abusive/harassing comments on official business indicates they know it's wrong! to do (otherwise why hide?) & brings a public office into disrepute whether at work or not.

Exactly!!! If you feel you aren’t stepping over the line why on earth don’t you have the balls to ‘stand by your opinion’ in your own name! #disgrace #troll

Any council condoning excusing & 'normalising' public online abuse/harassment anytime by one their public servants is irresponsible & damaging. Looks like @SheffCouncil in particular need some training! education in this area.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44995171 …

This may or may not be true (I haven't seen the offending Tweets) but Sheffield Council - indeed any council - can only act within the law and the powers available.

Creating a fake profile for the purpose of trolling (causing harassment and/or distress) or for posting revenge porn IS a criminal offence under the communications act. Therefor the council should be acting on it whether it’s private life or professional conduct.pic.twitter.com/qy474B9OQ5

Anna, apparently anyone who works for/within a council can do as they please with their fake trolling accounts because there is is no official effective or relevant Code of Conduct, policy or mechanism in place to deal with it. It's ANARCHY! 🙄

Strange how the ‘education system’ (paid for by the public) will not only judgementally rebuke but also sack staff for actions that do not come anyway near the abhorrent nature of these men. Like being brave enough to go public with your story of abuse to warn others 🤔.

Putting your head above the parapet you expect backlashes, criticisms. Crocodile water falls off my duck back 😉 But I absolutely won't take ILLEGAL malicious abuse, stalking, harassment from anyone and I won't be silenced on it either.pic.twitter.com/Am2rxPWidq
