I was involved with a man I met online for almost a year. I discovered his name and identity were fake and that he was a lawyer. The law needs to change.

Former Essex CC @SJKavanaghQPM had it right 2016 - 'Consolidate outdated existing laws used to tackle online abuse. it was not the role of police officers to be the arbiters of good taste online.' Untrained officers in this area of law one of problems for victims. #onlinesexabusepic.twitter.com/Qvwb7mqxce

I remember comments as I was asked by @BBCRadio4 2016 to also comment about the 'rise & handling' of online abuse. The police, tech companies & social media net giants responsibility! to tackle it. Two years on it's gotten worse! as recent incidents prove.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/apr/14/online-abuse-police-inconsistent-digital-crime-stephen-kavanagh …

There is so much work to do. Platforms, especially FB which is a sign up process for so many websites is enabling multiple offences to occur through lack of age and ID verification. Abuse, knife crime, underage drinking, you name it. Why should they not be held accountable?

To make a fake/criminal FB account, first it's too easy to make a fake/temp email account (i.e. Hotmail)give false sign up details with cheap untraceable Pay-As-You-Go sim cards (99p+) or public Wi-Fi which makes IP's/ID verification useless. Vicious cycle police can't tackle.

Jeez it's easy enough to get the password of someone else's REAL FB account and use that The idea of verified ID posts on social media as a magic solution is a Iranian/Chinese govs wet dream

One of oldest easiest scams to fool FB ID verification system so abusers keep their illegal anonymous accounts, is using random passports/names available on the net. The FB system can't tell difference! between a submitted real scanned passport & a photo of one found on Google...

Researched/watched my stalking abusers/police suspects do it for years. Then I described the illegal scam to a Mirror reporter in 2016. Who then wrote/published one the most weakest watered down articles associated with me 🙄 Shame a decent reporter didn't interview me on it.pic.twitter.com/HZciunjCr9

Loads #Facebook ID verification scams using fake ID. You'd think with all the billions & 'honest' promises/STATEMENTS FB regularly trot out! on their 'state of the art' technology & their 'users security'. They'd invest in a decent ID verification system?https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/53d5gk/scammers-are-uploading-tutorials-on-how-to-fool-facebook-with-a-false-id …

I really think the positive ID route is a false magical solution. FB just like a publican is responsible for policing trouble within it's own bar It should not be necessary to rigorously inspect the ID of 1,000 normal patrons just to deal with one harasser Instead he gets banned

Problem is there’s no way to ‘ban’ someone if there is no verification. They just set up another under a fake name.

Exactly. A vicious cycle, until someone comes up with something better than flimsy passport and IP verification. Not just a police failing. Regulating/fining/forcing tech giants in to investing/taking more responsibility would be a start.

What you'll end up with is Facebook handing over to the Iranian police the name and address of every Iranian kid who'd talked about being gay or criticised the ayatollah ..and then the Iranian police beating them up

Exactly you don't lock up all men , cos one is a rapist. If one Facebook user has broken a National law, then Facebook as a publican should call the cops and name the guys IP address. The police would better not rush in, but rather obtain a court order watch that IP
