It wasn't until I got perhaps 600m away from the far ridge that I saw a squat object jutting stubbornly from the hillside. Its position relative to the escarpment above suddenly struck me as very odd though. Easily 400m from the main tourist pathpic.twitter.com/Z9S6Xuf44I
The poppy wreath was apparent quite early on, but drawing closer, two collections of... scrap metal? of a light grey colour - really quite incongruous with the dark granite of the rock nearby - struck me.pic.twitter.com/N7KEoh8oWf
I investigated them first. Initially it looked like piles of scrap metal had been unceremoniously dumped on the untouched hillside, 550m above sea level with no road access. I was, for a minute, horrified at such callous behaviourpic.twitter.com/GPnfhnSdYk
But reading the memorial itself provided disquieting clarity...pic.twitter.com/VUOuCGfbis
"At this place on 6th July 1942 the Wellington Bomber 1465 crashed with the loss of all its Canadian crew. Here died R88687 F/Sgt Kemp U B, pilot R71725 F/Sgt Mittel E E R75322 Sgt Beatty H C R82352 Sgt Hayes H C R06035 Sgt Yuill K F Remember them."
76 years ago, five men, thousands of miles from home, lost their lives on a Welsh hillside. These pieces of scrap metal were their tomb, and they remain here today. I was nearly blown off a hill yesterday by a bit of breeze, but here this machine lies, untouched by rustpic.twitter.com/cp8QZTJ2BR
And someone, at some point, gathered up these pieces and built them a monument. And they are still remembered.pic.twitter.com/deWPywmdXN
And though it's mainly the sheep who keep them company these days, it gives me a bit of comfort to think that from time to time the odd wayfarer happens upon this memorial unknowingly, in the spirit of curiosity, and learns of these five souls who died so far from home.pic.twitter.com/Ksq7v8iu5J
