No man wrong!! Notice the two players running the opposite way.. to cover if something went wrong!! Now that is a master's move right there mate
-
I know pretty much nothing about soccer. Can someone in this thread explain to me why it was such an amazing "trick"/play?
-
So basically you can't sneak behind your opponent's defense line. It's called an "offside" if the player was behind the defense line the moment the ball was passed. The Japanese team managed to trap almost half the opponent's team in an offside trap, it's a very impressive trick
-
Defense line being the last defensive player?
-
Yes exactly
-
Makes sense. Thanks!

Invented by the Dutch (Cruyff, Ajax) in the 70's perfected by the Spanish (Guardiola, Barça) in the 2010's, well executed by the Japanese today. Nice move

you’re the first person who understood the hyperbole David!
-
I would say perfected by the Italians (Sacchi's Milan in the late 80's)
-
positional offside, a despicable practice long banned, thank god. Not the same thing
-
What is now 'banned' from the video? I didn't see any infringement; also, the only difference was that the Milan ones from the video weren't from set pieces…
-
just to make it clear, back then a play was deemed invalid for a single player being on an offside position even if he had nothing to do with the ball at all or wasn't interfering with game play or any where near the play zone
-
Good explanation
