There are (at least) 2 separate issues: - how much math is needed for ML - exclusiveness of ML community

I particularly take issue with the exclusiveness & lack of empathy for those who have faced extra barriers.

that's true even in graduate school settings

but in grad school when I didn't get something or understand someone (most of 1st year),

I just assumed it was one of the zillion other things I didn't know, kept my nose to grindstone and learnt it.

Never assumed it was a intentional effort to "keep me out".
