I agree. Bad ideas need to be tackled head on with good ideas. Not talking about them is convenient but doesn't really do much to: a) change minds of people with bad ideas, b) stop the spread of such ideas. Case n point, the election fraud bullshit happening right now.

Agreed. I think “don’t feed the troll” applies to the legion of anonymous/unknowns that infest social media, not cases like this.

I mostly agree. That said, "don't feed" policies are important because 1) They improve mental health for all, esp. UMs. 2) They remove the thing narcissists & bad-faith actors crave the most – attention. Contrast: media falling into Trump's trap & giving him free airtime in 2016.

The burden of engaging with
#troll to showcase their terrible behavior and hence take corrective action should not fall on women and minorities, but often does. - Show replies

This was much more than trolling it was bullying in the spotlight of the aftermath in which
@timnet- was fired by@GoogleAI. Dog whistle politics at its worst. He knew@AnimaAnandkumar is part of a group trying to make substantive change within AI and ethics. Much larger dynamics -
He actually tried to bully
@timnet as well- and for me was signalling to the herd to charge in. No lone wolf here-qualifying it as just a one off trolling incident is actually not recognizing the true dimensions of this space.

There is a way to fight trolls without feeding them IMHO: ask them to explain and justify their position. They will self contradict in two sentences. What feeds them is providing evidence they are wrong. This never works, at least in my (limited) experience. 1/2

This is a convoluted way to say you are right: we should not let toxic ideas spread unchallenged on social media.
