You cannot decide #ethics via surveys! Exactly what happened with @NeurIPSConf name change. Majority cannot decide for damage done to marginalized and vulnerable communities. You and @pmddomingos need to take a class in #ethics Listen to experts like @timnitGebruhttps://twitter.com/chrszegedy/status/1337477395960381441 …

This is not a decision. This is a (biased) poll of opinions. Still, interesting to see the discerepancy between the silent and vocal opinions.

Maybe but the biased poll won't tell us much given it has little to no control of any kind. It does beg the question why even have the poll... A kind of question which would be wise to ask often in many tech communities...

Some rough estimates are clear. So far, it seems that Pedro is right that he has more silent support than apparent from the answers. Either those people don't care or are scared to speak up on twitter. OTOH, he is unlikely to have a really overwhelming support.

Sorry, why does he have more silent support? Really didn't understand how the poll showed it

The whole poll is biased. What we can know is that 100s of people agreed with him, but did not speak up. OTOH, not clear if he is in majority or not. Maybe yes, but certainly not overwhelming (like 70-30).

We cannot even know if they voted once or several times. You cannot know how many people rejected your premise for polling and didn't vote and oppose him (my case, i didn't vote because I reject the poll idea)... We know nothing meaningful.

OK, I might be too optimistic. I don't think this poll is such high-profile people would care that much, but who knows.

The way you framed the poll was problematic in my opinion. You focused only on @pmddomingos claim of silent majority. It was an invitation to show support for him. You didn't uniformly present two sides. You didn't give examples of harmful papers that were published in past.

True. OTOH, you might expect the claim of "silent majority" would also provoke people to the other side, it should look outrageous to most that spoke up. But I agree the framing was biased.
