I was recuperating from medical insurance when @pmddomingos tweeted about slippery slope nonsense. Exactly same arguments used to stop @NeurIPSConf name change. Privileged don't want even the minimum accountability because they are insecure their hold on power will be minimized

What a great excuse for letting the few dictate to the many.

This is not a decision. This is a (biased) poll of opinions. Still, interesting to see the discerepancy between the silent and vocal opinions.
-
Maybe but the biased poll won't tell us much given it has little to no control of any kind. It does beg the question why even have the poll... A kind of question which would be wise to ask often in many tech communities...

Reflecting on the impacts and benifits that one's research does is literally the most important thing imo. Assessing the societal implications of these works and then considering it for review process is the logical thing to do. I have no idea why this is even being debated.

One may as well survey medieval doctors to ask if the human body is based on the four humours, y/n, and expect the result to mean anything. An abandonment of logic and appeal to demagoguery, really.

people with power in this industry actively advocating against critical review of the impacts of the systems they design is absolutely frightening. this work couldn't be more urgent.

Thank you.
