I assumed that she had addiction and mental health issues not from her genius but rather from her childhood. I was happy that they made it clear that her genius wasn't due to the tranquilizers/hallucinations

That's partly true. They do show her mother also being troubled and being good at math. I hope the public doesn't conflate the two

I agree. I only watched the 1st episode. I did not like that the drama was driven by a dark, mentally ill addiction state. It's not that those states don't exist, I just don't find entertainment in them driving a story.
