That was the disappointing thing about #QueensGambit It seemed to imply that a female genius had to have addiction and mental health issues. I guess they needed drama and were not creative enough to think beyond the usual tropes of a troubled genius.

I assumed that she had addiction and mental health issues not from her genius but rather from her childhood. I was happy that they made it clear that her genius wasn't due to the tranquilizers/hallucinations

That's partly true. They do show her mother also being troubled and being good at math. I hope the public doesn't conflate the two

I hadn’t thought of that: you’re right. By avoiding the trope of bad Russians, who are all men, they amplified the gender bias. Enough drama was possible without that angle. ... and I realize a need to stop teasing my mother her photo was about the other headline on the page

I agree. I only watched the 1st episode. I did not like that the drama was driven by a dark, mentally ill addiction state. It's not that those states don't exist, I just don't find entertainment in them driving a story.
