Thanks @fchollet for speaking out against #misinformation Scientists can't claim they are not responsible because engineers are implementing them and policy people are making decisions. That's a cop out. @ylecun @Facebookhttps://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1326570805505847296 …

I don't think History will remember someone like Lecun as a convnet pioneer. He will be remembered as the man who was in charge of AI at Facebook during the decade when Facebook's algorithms weakened democracy worldwide and triggered a global wave of far-right populism.

Exactly! Well said. Scientists and engineers need to step up and take personal responsibility for how their work is used.

Why demonise fb or lecun? Most tech employees are signed on to maximise financial returns for stakeholders. Once signed up to that priority you are signed up to the behaviour & collateral damage that flows logically from it.

You're making a very clear case for why said employees should be signed on to consider the consequences of what they make. Not sure why this would be a counterargument.

I really don't get the sentiment about FB and its connection with the resurgent of far-right populism. It is a platform. There are going to be adverts and fake news. There are countless blogs that spread missinformation, do you blame the HTML engineers of the blog platform? (1/2)

There are magazines and newspapers and TV stations that they do the same. Do you shutdown the TV network or the printing press? As far as I remember lunatics who believed on conspiracies and lies will find a way to source the information they want to see. It used to be radio.

I think it's a huge overstatement akin to claims of substantial Russian interference. People need to understand that Trump isn't a consequence of Facebook algos errors. If you reach a bit outside the liberal bubble u'll see why.

It's not to claim that algorithmic biases don't affect anything. They do and sometimes substantially. Yet, rest assured people voted for Trump b/c they align with him on a "spiritual", non-factoid, level.

Definitely thank you for saying this, we need AI aligned with humanity. Any AI leader with a conscience would understand the imperative to not defer responsibility on its use, and not only teach the skills, but be involved in its ethical considerations and practicality in policy.

You now probably know the story but this is another good occasion to remind those who don't know it that facebook *does* remove content… when the said content is a very calm and friendly discussion on the misalignment of social media algorithms:https://twitter.com/L_badikho/status/1207700177752133633 …

I don't think Yann LeCun did it himself, but we have now reasons to believe Facebook removed a comment from Yoshua Bengio (and all subsequent replies to it) in a calm discussion on the importance of AI alignement for social media algorithms. more details: https://www.facebook.com/hsuwh/posts/10106278971986771?comment_id=10106280430114671&reply_comment_id=10106409402967041 … pic.twitter.com/n8asyis9aO

one year later, still no explanation on why my comments, Y.Bengio's and others disappeared from @ylecun's page. Discussion still available on @banazir's page: https://www.facebook.com/hsuwh/posts/10106278971986771?comment_id=10106280430114671&reply_comment_id=10106409402967041 … People can note how much good intent I'm assuming YL has (and I still do), but after one year…
