Don't cook up use cases for #AI when simple human input solved the problem. At best it is a poor substitute for human. At worst you are propagating #AI #bias ans amplifying and automating ithttps://twitter.com/thegautamkamath/status/1311793797857251328 …

Hallelujah, you'll soon be able to actually choose how your images are cropped! Why couldn't you do this from day 1? Seems like a classic overuse of ML. h/t @tsimonite https://twitter.com/TwitterSupport/status/1311789202779103247 …

Engineers sometimes, mistakenly, believe that using ML will help avoid natural human bias. It instead just bakes in a particular bias into the process.

They might also think that because eye movements are unconscious, that somehow makes whatever they do fair and safe. Or, that a wide enough sample of different peoples' eye movements would not show ingrained societal bias, which I don't think we have any reason to believe.

Sarcasm: Let’s live in our own bubble and enhance what we are exposed to by making sure AI helps us remove everything not in line with our own preferences.

Broadly agree, but I feel there's a lesson to be learned from youtube. When they let people choose thumbnails, it led to a lot of clickbait'y behavior. Perhaps cropping has less nefarious uses, or I'm not creative enough. Answer might be: simple rules (mid crop)? Dunno.

FB, tinder, grindr, and many others have allowed users to chose the cropping/centering of images for years, ostensibly without issue.

YES!!!! This is the best advice ever. Doesn't make business sense, doesn't make human sense, doesn't make ANY KIND OF SENSE. AI is expensive, it's imperfect, it risks systemic bias, it risks exclusion... Why use this when you have access to the ground truth?

Absolutely! But this is outside the comfort zone of the typical ML researcher / reviewer: validation is not easy, choice of the target, evaluation of its biases become crucial. Needs a culture shift away from simply-formalized applications. I've dedicated 10yrs to such problems

Also, more and more ML devs work as part of teams in the context of product development with a product owner that prioritises the features. With more and more ML specialists being trained, the economy in a recession etc, I am not sure we can expect more bottom-up ethics.

Removes an avenue for personal expression too, in favor of something that serves the business interests.
