It's impossible to separate 'doing research' from 'doing administration'. People and how you treat them are core to a healthy environment and producing good results.

He may not have cared at all about how his words will be perceived . Some extremely successful people are wired that way - and I was on the wrong side of that a few times early in my career

I agree that the view is toxic, and it sounds quite Feynman-ish, but is Feynman not referring to Wolfram's view of ordinary people rather than his own?
-
Exactly. As I read it, from this letter one cannot conclude that Feynman himself thinks any human is "ordinary"

I am reading it in a way that Feynman is just listing what Wolfram does or how he looks at people, not his (Feynman's) doing or the way he looks at people
-
I think this is very obvious from his answer. The quotes throughout the letter are there to quote the words Wolfram used in his letter. Plus, he never suggests to fall in love with a woman.

Feyman was a douchebag.
-
He was. That doesn't really come through in this letter, though, does it?

I understand the letter differently than you. Plus we do not know what prior conversations they had. We are missing context.

Why try justify behavior I view as toxic? I have seen terrible managers who share a similar disdain for humanity. It is also highly correlated with sexual harassment in my experience. So I hope you will reconsider
