Oppenheimer's Berkeley recommendation letter for Feynman mentions that Wigner said, "He is a second Dirac, only this time human."https://medium.com/cantors-paradise/oppenheimers-letter-of-recommendation-for-richard-feynman-1943-15dcdaf131b7 …

All this hero worship will deter many women and underrepresented communities from taking up #STEM Instead I got a recommendation letter in my undergrad saying "like other women she hasn't done anything super impressive but she hasn't messed up either." Recommendations have #bias

I think it depends on the professor too. I (a brown female) got a flattering recommendation saying I am one of the best students he advised, each time I asked my professor (a white male), whenever I could see the letter he submitted that is.

Of course. I have had many supportive mentors who have written strong recommendation letters for me to get here. This one sticks out as an outlier but it still stung.

Comparing the environments I was in with and without recommendation letters, I see zero added value of using, let alone requiring, such letters.

I agree @requiring. Using is necessary as many places ask for them. They are needed even in several post PhD positions. It is not something one person or a small group can change, in my opinion.
