Oppenheimer's Berkeley recommendation letter for Feynman mentions that Wigner said, "He is a second Dirac, only this time human."https://medium.com/cantors-paradise/oppenheimers-letter-of-recommendation-for-richard-feynman-1943-15dcdaf131b7 …

All this hero worship will deter many women and underrepresented communities from taking up #STEM Instead I got a recommendation letter in my undergrad saying "like other women she hasn't done anything super impressive but she hasn't messed up either." Recommendations have #bias

I think it depends on the professor too. I (a brown female) got a flattering recommendation saying I am one of the best students he advised, each time I asked my professor (a white male), whenever I could see the letter he submitted that is.

Of course. I have had many supportive mentors who have written strong recommendation letters for me to get here. This one sticks out as an outlier but it still stung.

also these anecdotes about him... here are just a few. i mean we know enough about team dynamics to know that the "10x contributor" who happens to be toxic drags down the whole project because 10+ equally brilliant collaborators realized they don't need to suffer abusive garbagepic.twitter.com/lFanibInSj

Margit Dirac told both George Gamow and Anton Capri in the 1960s that her husband had said to a house visitor, "Allow me to present Wigner's sister, who is now my wife."[39][40]

Another story told of Dirac is that when he first met the young Richard Feynman at a conference, he said after a long silence, "I have an equation. Do you have one too?"[41]

this is to say nothing of the fact that writing 10x lines of code isn't the same as having 10x as many brains catching logical errors or perspectives noticing gaps in logic

Why ? There are men that I deeply admire, who were game changers (e.g., Feynman), there are women that I deeply admire, who where game changers (e.g. Noether), calling them "superhuman" is a bit ridiculous, but not sexist I think !

You completely missed message. We should not emphasize too much on glowing recommendations some famous scientists received early in their careers. There are so many others who had to fight their way to be recognized. Women you mention..what glowing recommendations did they get?

"like other women"? Seriously? Why are we not naming these people? I'm deeply sorry this happened to you. If I ever see something like this written about any of my 2 daughters, just watch what happens.
