There are definitely issues with their cropping algorithm - but this isn't it. Images from websites are just cropped using the center of the image as an anchor, regardless of content. The four photos are all one image, with the top and bottom cut off evenly.
IMO this is the way cropping should be done if automated, as using an algorithm is going to cause issues. Twitter also needs to allow manual cropping, like they already do for cover images, so posters have the freedom to make the crop look as desired.
