      Am curious if there were also any efforts towards distilling some of the old school EE/Sig-proc wisdom of Vaidyanathan, Hassibi et al that came out of Caltech into the deep learning/RL world.

          That's so awesome to hear :) ! Every time I see checkerboard patterns in some fancy GAN's outputs, PP's “Multirate Systems and Filter Banks” comes to mind. DL's current usage of upsample & deconv blocks would almost be considered hate crimes in a comm theorist's book :P
