  PhD at 29 here, before I got it I helped build ASR/NLP products in 2 small companies (both sell them to customers now). Extremely valuable experience, now just started exploring what can be done with it in the academia

  Good point. But for many switching to PhD after considerable time in industry is not practical like Vijay said. In such case, why not US Universities open a Part-time PhD option? Grad school pays less stipend anyway to leave a career.
