Once I was giving a talk at Univ of Alberta. They asked for a pic for the talk announcement. I sent them this. I got an email from one of the female admin staff that my pic was inappropriate and I was making other female engineering students uncomfortable! https://twitter.com/AnimaAnandkumar/status/1288155738418737154 …pic.twitter.com/khPEYwrzOK

Can I be completely honest? I don’t think this pic is helping your career. It gives you short-term positive attention, but silently hurts your chances of building long-term professional relationships. Being attractive is unfortunately a double-edged sword for women.

Women are torch bearers of patriarchy. You have no business giving advice that is not solicited. I have now muted your toxic tweet.

Mute me too while you're at it because I think her helpful advice is quite right. Also. Why do people announce they are muting? Do they imagine that person or anyone else would actually care?

This is a picture of me receiving a department outstanding teaching award. I had the freedom to wear what I want. It's not professional in the "Western" white male standard but I could do it. I got couple of comments that weren't welcome and I shut them right away. 1/2pic.twitter.com/0wgAysRnNx

If I could do that, why the heck we keep judging and asking women to look exactly like the white male professional standard? Keep doing what you want to do until the standards change. If this society truly celebrate diversity and inclusivity, then appearance should be an issue2/2

U look so beautiful! There are a few women in STEM and so many of them had to climb the ladder by following the "rules" that the misogyny is a part of them.

Glad you are challenging the status quo. Women engineers must not conform to this idea of professionalism where one shouldn't look attractive to be considered good at work. This is a trap laid out for women engineers. Don't fall into that trap.

Being judged on my appearance was the last thing that crossed my mind when I decided to go into science. I really don’t care how people dress/look because I know that makes no impact on their ability.

Me, too. And science is actually not bad. If your science is good, you will succeed. I try to dress such that the attention is on my science, not on my appearance, that’s all.
