May be you should get another perspective from a woman who got married through these arranged marriage system, actively seeking the help of her parents and family, and now happy with it? There are many, you know? There are two sides for this issue.

The issue is the tyrrany. The option for matchmaking can exist without a social structure that forces it on women who don't want it. Same goes for marriage.

Nobody is forced. The parents might arm-twist their children into signing up, but they mostly know when to stop. The fact is a large proportion of Indian women actively seek such matchmaking services. They have their reasons why they do that, instead of going on Tinder or Grindr.

Taking away your passport to keep you from leaving the country is more than "arm twisting". Traditions can adapt to increase freedom of choice.
