so much has changed for the better in a decade. Numerous inter-racial and inter-caste marriages in my extended family. One of my cousins is queer and out and people have accepted that. Change can also happen quickly. We have to remain hopeful.
Craziest thing around #IndianMatchmaking is how much I dreaded it even as a kid. I had a dream when I was just 7 about being forcibly married off to someone I didn't like! This is much before anyone had brought up issue of marriage with me. So much sexism was inbuilt in system.
Omg, I have memories about dreading it as a child too!
And the relatives who jokingly threaten little girls at family socials - "if you don't do <whatever a supposed good kid should>, we will marry you off" The fun part was my father politely calling them idiots to their faces due to this.
Arranged marriages and such TV shows are also common in Turkey. My own sister was bullied by our own father into marrying someone she did not know. She was barely 19 and ended up divorced in a few years.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I couldnt bear 20 min of #IndianMatchmaking w/o being triggered. Some friends (Caucasian) commented how much I have already 'deviated' from the 'norm' from what they see on that show. I'm tired of trying to escape the stereotypes

Completely agree with you @AnimaAnandkumar thank you so much for bringing this up so boldly. I have completed my PhD this year and started my postdoc and is 28, going through the same phase, met people with similar mindset, some suitors even offered me job along with marriage 
oh my God, thank you for putting this out there—wow I had no idea what that experience was like.
I guess I was imagining the young woman setting constraints. But this makes more sense. I’m properly horrified now.
