Really nice post! I talked a bit about these failures of AI (in comparing them to human cognition) in a talk I gave recently, the theme being that humans don't fail in these unusual-cases-not-in-the-test-set and that the reasons are instructive.

... But I was mainly making a scientific point, and your blog post makes the symmetric societal point: the hype was empty gaslighting. But you can't gaslight a virus. Hopefully amidst all the terribleness will rise some good, like higher standards, in a lot of areas.
