We work in a multicultural community. If someone's casual Mysoginy is okay where they live it doesn't mean I have to accept it. I am free to call out demeaning behaviour and explain it is *not* a compliment. Am I turning into the STEM version of @emrazz 🤦🏻‍♀️? @AcademicChatterhttps://twitter.com/MiltonBroome/status/1211397917392683011 …

I think tolerance needs to be aloud for possible cultural differences. There was no malicious intention signaled. In traditional hindi communities this may well convey genuine respect. It's easy to mistake social media posts such as these as inappropriate by modern standards.

Having grown up in India. no part of our culture encourages to compliment a female professor for her looks. It's opposite. Traditionally Guru or teacher is elevated to position of God and throughout history there have been so many female scholars and their looks never mentioned

I’ve seen how folks look up to my Mom (pediatrician and president of xyz). And this is true. I sometimes wonder if US is more regressed than India in this regard.

Please just don’t! Do not overgeneralise hindutva India and the guru bullshit. Yah and we rape and kill women too. Women live with their families in law, right?! That’s Indian culture as well. Can we now generalise?

Painting this spiritual picture where females are equated to gods is the most common way patriarchy works in India and NRIs promote this Hindutva agenda to somehow connect to this dreamy Indian culture picture that they feel they're losing connection to. This is very regressive.
