#holiday toxicity from Scott continues. He doesn't have the courage to face supporters on my Twitter feed, instead he prefers to continue to rant in his own echo chamber. Unfriending me is a courtesy to me! not giving me credit for bringing up issue is a credit to me!pic.twitter.com/HJ68lW5XLA

One more toxic comment from Scott Aaronson. His misogyny in full display. Only men make sense to him.pic.twitter.com/avyJ6pgvPm

Sadly Scott Aaronson closed his thread and didn't even let me address. Very definition of silencing. He equates struggles of women and minorities to aspbergery males! The tone deaf nature of his comments is truly disappointing. He squandered a valuable opportunity to be an ally.pic.twitter.com/XkZtm2f6nN

Scott Aaronson's comments further reveal his biases. His blind admiration of Pinker is sad for someone who claims to be a scientist and open minded. Sexism and racism is never experienced from someone with privilege. And comparing Pinker to Marie Curie (barf!)pic.twitter.com/x2BpiNy9y3

Read my latest blog post detailing recent events around naming of #quantumsupremacy and parallels it shares with #neurips name change. Also cluelessness of privileged men like @sapinker and Aaronson https://anima-ai.org/2019/12/26/quantum-supremacy-the-neo-nazis/ … Happy holidays!pic.twitter.com/LsV16r7qd1

NIPS -> NeurIPS makes sense (although I don't follow that area closely) but q supremacy is different because no specific group is being targeted by it. I think it's like other math words like dominates, hierarchy, inequality, that have unpleasant meanings in society but not math.

Please look at my Google search news results before coming to that conclusion. Most standard use of the term is white supremacy

1/2 Yes, and I saw other uses too, like "5G supremacy" or "retail supremacy." Should all those be dropped too, leaving it only for white supremacists? Just because a word reminds you of something bad doesn't mean we need to drop it.

2/2 I get the word association. I don't get the general principle. What about "discrimination" for classifiers? How much needs to be banned? Unlike NIPS, there is no clear minority being targeted.

I know these debates can be acrimonious sometimes but I do welcome ideas for improving our academic language - I'm just not convinced in this case.

you don't need to be convinced to be supportive. If a marginalized group in the community is negatively affected and there is no harm done to you by the name change, why not support it as a good will gesture to signal inclusion? I emphasize this in my post

Name change debate is a barometer to deeper issues in STEM. Pseudo intellectuala vehemently opposing it and writing reams of articles shows toxicity in community. It is fine to be not convinced or be neutral but vehement opposition is a bad sign

I agree, but we don't have a marginalized group who is harmed by q supremacy (again unlike N[eur]IPS). The NIPS jokes sounded awful. Here's what a supremacy joke looks like:https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/classical
