I am not surprised at cluelessness of young #DeepLearning researchers given their leader is a dogmatic bully. Bayesian methods will be increasingly important as safety-critical applications like #SelfDriving and #healthcare deploy #AI. @andrewgwils has a great threadhttps://twitter.com/andrewgwils/status/1210354001041969152 …

I’m stupefied by the arguing (which some call ”war”) going on within the ML community. Do some people actually think in such black’n’white dogmatic ways? And do some people actually think that they have a ”leader”? Honest question.

Nope. And nope. This are just strawmen from Anima. Plenty of deep learning researchers do Bayesian research, and Yann LeCun is hardly a leader these days.

I hope we could avoid getting too personal and have a reasoned discussion (not ”war” again!)
I just wanted to make an honest question. The way I was trained to do science is to avoid dogmas and to use whatever works. Certainly not to hail a great leader.2 replies 0 retweets 4 likes -
"use whatever works" describes deep learning community pretty well. Too well, in fact. The reason Bayesianism or Symbolism is not popular inside DL is precisely because they don't work, and it's not because of a lack of trying.

And deep learning community will be more than happy to adopt new ideas, but they must be shown to work well in practice, not just on paper.

This is shallow thinking. Just focusing on using a tool without understanding it leads to biased black boxes with adverse real world effects. This is a dangerous dogma to only focus on applying without understanding.

I clearly stated that it is my belief that Bayesian methods are pivotal for safety critical applications. Your cluelessness amuses me.
