Wow. This is horrendous. One of our papers was recently plagiarised by a UW Madison PhD student who seems to have no supervision and might not know better. Obviously not comparable to what was going on here..

Wow, I went to UW-Madison ECE and had heard about Akbar's reputation. Gautham from IITM 2002 did his PHD under him. Sad to see this.

This really highlights the importance of talking to grad students about their advisors before joining a lab. It's terrible to think that someone will have such an amount of control over you for 5 years

This is truly sad. There is so little oversight in advisor-student conduct that it turns out to be a coin toss if your advisor is an asshole or not. Some of us get lucky and other don’t.

Such cases are sadly much commonplace in Indian Universities. Although the authorities are sensitized about such possible abusive behaviours by people with academic powers, only scarce steps have been taken to ensure safety and mental health of graduate students.
