Looking for guidance to handle #stemtrollalert as diversity chair of @iclr_conf with @kswersk Removed earlier part of message that identifies sender. Familiar tactic of trolls to justify #manels #allmalespeakers. Help us to tackle this @InclusionInML #DiversityandInclusionpic.twitter.com/uSErOaCU6H

There’s an online conference diversity calculator for this if you weren’t already aware: http://aanandprasad.com/diversity-calculator/?groupName=women&numSpeakers=20&populationPercentage=10 …

Conferences exist to share knowledge, spark ideas, and educate. It is important for people entering a field to see other people with similar backgrounds. Anyone in the AI/ML field should care about the field as a whole and should be eager to elevate role models into the spotlight

Is there a "masculine/feminine" side of everything? Of course not. Is it possible that some younger women or an URM will see someone on stage from their background and be inspired? Absolutely.

Their argument holds if everything wouldve had been fair since time eternity to now. But since it has been biased against women/underrepresented groups, yes of course, we need to give special priority to such groups. You might lose your patience replying to all such emails though

Precisely tactic of #trolls is DOS attacks on diversity activists. I have decided to not respond because I will get further attacked. That's where #maleallies can be of enormous help.

To be honest, I think that the best reaction is to explain the underlying reasons: Human biases imply that we replicate what we see, hence creating a world will equal opportunities implies specific efforts to push towards balanced situations.

The sender might or might not have given proper thoughts to the problem. Making him think is the best we can do, though it might be hard :). Overall, I found that a good principle in life is Hanlon's razor (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanlon%27s_razor …). It helps me keep emotions out of my reactions.
