DL represents a scientific movement & I like to think when “young people” defend it, they mean to defend the move from traditional scientific norms to one in which massive data & massive compute is of paramount significance.Methods that can’t make use of these will cease to exist

DL has yet to do more than associate statistics (black box outcomes). When methods embrace physics (How and Why) to effectively predict novel situation dynamics from known properties it will be science and not statistics.
Nothing can be truer, deep learning will subside in due time and science will still progress. As always, big ideas and creativity will be the driving forces behind that progress.
This is why we need to embrace and cultivate the interdisciplinary nature of ML. Most scientists look at the datasets rather than the implication of the dataset. Collaborative research will only strengthen what we do.
