So many scientists have repeatedly asked @awscloud to stop selling its flawed Rekognition tool to law enforcement. Yet, response is unscientific fraudulent claims. https://qz.com/1586544/ai-experts-want-amazon-to-stop-selling-facial-recognition-to-law-enforcement/ … #AInotready #AInotjustdeeplearning

I really appreciate you speaking out w/ your unique perspective. I was originally going to make a critique about the language of framing ‘fear’ —as opposed to ‘afraid’— as an ‘emotion’, & how it differed in tone from the previous 6 categories. But you said it better than I could.

Thank you for your public stance. People are very afraid to publicly condemn
@awscloud I am truly disappointed that this is my former employer. I am sorry for recommending this as a place where I believed that good things can be done for humanity.

I'm disappointed that Werner expressed this point of view. Comparing ML to steel is disingenuous. Steel doesn't get made with a bias towards rending flesh. But any good ML model in fact *has* to be trained and built with an application domain in mind.

At this point, I am starting to be concerned about using AWS for educational purposes. What does it mean to do "ai for social good" while using these services? I have no answer, just a big headache.

I feel it’s wrong to blame scientists. For one thing, scientists don’t build production grade tools :). Secondly, any company can build this using foreign developers. If it’s not Amazon, it would be Palentir. What we need is laws that disallows government to use this on citizens.

This was one of the most intriguing things I read about today. Could you explain why you mentioned this in the end - "There is a reason why there are so few women in tech."? Do you think if there were more women in tech, they would have made more ethical decisions?
