There is more to AI research than what Google/DeepMind says there is. Go out and do some investigating reporting!

Hmm, suppose enough prominent AI researchers all agreed to consistently call out such articles... you don't think that will create incentives for journalists to try something else? (The other economic issues notwithstanding -- I agree there are other issues at play.)
I agree with @yisongyue I am disappointed @jackclarkSF that you think we should not publicly call out #fakenews and media hype around #ai. There is a price I pay each time I call out but I am doing this because this is the right thing to do

I'm of the opinion there's a lot of valuable stuff to be done in the vein of education and support. It doesn't interest me to criticise things unless I have a relationship with the person in question that means they'll be receptive to my criticism, in which case we talk irl

So I think we interpret the value and utility of these things differently. It's unclear to me how (some types of) criticism lead to a real change in behavior, rather than increased adversarialism between parties
