I'm an ML PhD student at Caltech, funded by an Amazon AI Fellowship. Realistically, I think we have to acknowledge that a major reason that big companies fund this kind of research is that is helps them look as if they care about it. Just how it is.
I mentioned in my tweet that Amazon fellowship and faculty grants are different from a joint NSF Amazon program. There are no clear cut boundaries and language appears to be vague. Perhaps with more clarity this could be made to work
I guess I don't accept that this is just how it is... I realize there may be good intentions, and I don't wish to vilify funding research (at any level). What I find problematic is the coupling of a national funding agency and company that has been a bad actor in the AI space
Hi Nic, just to bee clear: when I said "just how it is", I meant "this is how it is now" - I totally agree we should aim higher!
Agreed - there are potential ways for the funding streams to be made to work... My reading isn't charitable, but I don't think that this is an entirely positive arrangement and I am skeptical of encroachment from Amazon in federal funding.
