Prof. Anima Anandkumar Retweeted Leila A. McNeill

Richard Feynman was my childhood hero. I was inspired by his autobiography but glossed over his views on women. Only after my personal adult experiences in academia, it hit me how terrible he must have been to women. We can admire a guy for one quality and condemn for another.https://twitter.com/leilasedai/status/1082656192244133890 …

Months ago I promised to write a take-down of Richard Feynman. Well, here it is. The science is not separate from the scientist. https://thebaffler.com/outbursts/surely-youre-a-creep-mr-feynman-mcneill?fbclid=IwAR2iHXFz3N0VtkUXoTq_6WtxAnma5q8z0V95vDMSdTE0KcPlsL9H5CoNuOQ …

@leilasedai I think this is, perhaps, one of the biggest impacts of #MeToo and #meTooSTEM is that people didn't realize until now the magnitude of the problem nor the impact it has had on survivors and society. It has brought to light that his behavior was both common AND wrong.

I was personally guilty of it myself. I was a teenager (~13) when I first read his autobiography, and was naive. But I didn't think twice about women he was talking about. We as a society undervalue women and we all have embedded that into our internal biases.

The article is quite overblown and seem to be written as linkbait. I know of no women who stopped doing science because of Feynman but know quite a few who came to science because of him or his writings. Author here didn’t do her research and that’s truely disappointing.

I am not going to elaborate on facts that are already publicly available. Author should have found them and presented in balanced way but journalism these days is just strongly opinionated essays for what author already wants to believe. This is not say Feynman was free from bias
